Marcus Wootton Kahn 21, London

Before I came into care I wasn't very happy. I moved around a lot of countries, but it wasn't a holiday. I went to Spain, but instead of having a good time I slept rough, which was frightening, and I was often hungry. One day I was woken up by two policemen who treated me to a doughnut.

I also went to Germany and my birth mum took me to a supermarket. I stole ice-pops that were not frozen. They tasted like a lovely drink. I was five years old.

When I was eight I was fostered by Helen. We went on a lot of trips and holidays. I was 16 when she adopted me. When I travel now it is fun and I like to stay in lovely hotels. Last year, I went to New York, which was brilliant.
