Makin Trax, Walsall College, West Midlands

1 min read Education Extra-curricular
What are they doing? Walsall College is delivering the Makin Trax project in 10 schools across Walsall, Dudley and Sandwell. It uses music technology to engage 14- to 15-year-olds who are in danger of becoming Neet (not in employment, education or training).

How does it work? The project uses two purpose-fitted buses kitted out with high-tech musical equipment to allow young people to make their own music. Learners who take part in the project work towards a music technology certificate at level one or two, equivalent to two grade B GCSEs.

What do the young people think? Fourteen-year-old Connor Boden says he has learnt a lot from the scheme. He explains: "The project gives us a chance to make our own tracks and it's a lot of fun. I thought it would be hard at first, but it's easy once you get used to it. I would definitely consider doing something like this in the future."
