What are they doing? Young construction apprentices from St. Edmund Arrowsmith School, Knowsley Park Centre for Learning and Huyton Arts and Sports Centre for Learning are taking part in heritage skills lessons one day a week at Knowsley Community College.

What does this involve? The students are learning how to apply the skills of bricklaying, joinery and interior design to older buildings. They are also studying how to create stained glass in addition to traditional carpentry, stonemasonry and gilding, using traditional tools and materials.

Why are they doing it? Traditional building methods are disappearing so skilled craftsmen are keen to pass on their skills. Workers with knowledge of traditional construction skills are still in demand because all buildings built before 1919 require specialist maintenance and repair.

What about employment prospects? Councillor Graham Morgan, Knowsley's cabinet member for regeneration, economy and skills, says the apprentices have the opportunity to forge lifelong careers in the heritage sector.
