What did they do? Young people from Knowsley Community College took part in a conservation skills project. They worked with specialist craftsmen for four days in Northumberland and learned how to use their bricklaying, joinery and interior design skills.

What did the students learn? The building students learned how to build and repair walls with lime mortar instead of cement. They also learned about lime slaking, historic jointing, finishes and pointing and the challenges of working on historic buildings. The interior design students learned about traditional decorative work and had a go at gilding, gothic stencilling, marbling and graining. The joiners worked with the National Trust's regional building department at Wallington Hall and made sash windows for a row of stone cottages.

Who organised the project? The project was part of a wider council initiative by Knowsley Council designed to help local people preserve the borough's heritage. The wider project is being funded by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant for £177,000 over two years.
