Bournville College, Birmingham

What did they do? Bournville College developed a social media campaign to allow students and prospective students to become members of an online college community. It was launched last month in partnership with social media agency Big Cat.

How does it work? The college has a blog, which is regularly updated with news, details about students' achievements, course advice and events listings. Twitter, Facebook and MySpace are also linked in to the college website, so that students can share information and course-related material from the internet.

Why is it good? It gives young people the chance to communicate online and provides them with information, advice and guidance on courses and extra curricular activities. It also has a facility to tell prospective students what life is really like at college.

How has it helped the college? Alma Aganovic, marketing manager at Bournville College, says the campaign has helped more students to engage in college life. "We are pleased to be joining the online community through the use of social media; interacting with our students is very important to us. We are keen to keep an open line of communication with students both current and prospective," she says.
