What are they doing? Gateshead College has appointed an internet safety officer. He will lead a two-year initiative designed to raise awareness of online safety among staff and students, and the wider community who access the college's services using the internet.

What will the initiative involve? Staff, students and members of the community will have access to a programme of workshops and training materials produced in partnership with organisations including Northumbria Police and the North East Fraud Forum. Staff induction programmes will include internet safety training and there will be sessions on social networking.

Why is the college doing this? The launch of the initiative is partially a response to the government's Digital Britain 2009 report. The college was also concerned by a recent poll of 2,000 11- to 18-year-olds by BeatBullying, which showed an alarming growth in cyberbullying.

What difference will it make? Gateshead College's e-learning manager Andrew Robson believes the appointment of an internet safety officer will make online access safer and easier for staff, students and their families.
