The UK government has formed a council on child internet safety in response to recommendations made by TV psychologist Tanya Byron. Lauren Higgs examines work across the UK to make the internet safer for children.

- ENGLAND

In June this year the government published the Byron Review Action Plan, following Dr Tanya Byron's report Safer Children in a Digital World. The plan sets out deadlines for the government to deliver on Byron's key recommendations, including her proposal to create the UK Council for Child Internet Safety.

The council, launched officially last month, is designed to improve internet education and regulation and tackle cyberbullying. It will also provide support for vulnerable young people and remove sites that promote harmful behaviour.

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, which is part of the police, also works to protect children online.
