Meet local youth worWhen most local authority youth services are fighting to maintain their budgets, this is not the time to argue over whether more youth provision should be open during the week or at the weekends (CYP Now, 2-8 February, p3). We should be arguing for more youth provision full stop.k needs

This needs to be based on what young people want and need in their local area. In London, crime statistics suggest that there is a need for more youth provision and positive activities to be available for young people, especially on Fridays and Saturdays.

Forging greater links between youth work and youth justice services and developing more diversionary activities and provision for young people, based on when they want and need it most, seems to be one of the most likely ways to protect vulnerable youth service budgets.

Regulations for care homes

I was interested to see Labour MP Ann Coffey put forward the case for a change in planning regulations relating to children's homes. In essence, Coffey argues that it is unfair on local communities that a domestic property can be converted into a facility for care for up to six residents without the need to apply for planning permission.
