Letter: Qualifications cut

1 min read
I read with interest the article highlighting the "plan to cut qualifications" for working with children (Children Now, 9-15 November).

In Scotland, the process for registering staff with the Scottish SocialServices Council will begin next year. The council has produced a listof qualifications that the current workforce will need to have by thetime re-registration takes place in three years, in an attempt to createan integrated qualification framework.

While this may appear to be a positive way forward, reducing the list ofqualifications is not without issues. For example, there is a view thatnew workers coming into the sector beyond 2006 should bepre-qualified.

If this does happen there is a fear that vocational qualifications forchildcare workers will disappear, and that the only qualifications routewill be through HNC and HND-type courses. The dilemma then is how canpeople like school leavers or even those supporting a club by helpingwith snacks work in the sector?
