Letter: Independent fostering is fair

1 min read
Just an observation from someone with a vested interest in the subject of out-of-authority placements for looked-after children.

Children Now's article perpetuates the myth that independent fosteringproviders cost substantially more than similar in-authority places anddraws on skewed data from Social Services Performance AssessmentFramework Indicators 2004, which quoted the weekly fostering unit costas 234 in-house compared with 765 charged by independentfostering providers (Children Now, 12-18 October). It is a shame thatthe July report published by the British Association for Adoption &Fostering and the Fostering Network on the subject of weekly unit costscould not have been alluded to in this article, but then such data wouldnot have the same dramatic journalistic impact.

The Government expectation of a partnership in the public, voluntary andprivate sectors that promotes choice and value for money is sadlylacking when it comes to addressing the needs of the nation's mostvulnerable children.
