Letter: Moving standards forward

1 min read
A confidential report from the Department for Education and Skills concludes there is no statistical evidence yet that Every Child Matters has had a positive impact on school standards, but neither is there evidence that it has distracted schools from the standards agenda (Children Now, 25-31 October).

Research conducted for the Local Government Association by the NationalFoundation for Educational Research reveals only 10 per cent of schools"are actively involved in the new (Every Child Matters) structures"(Children Now, 25-31 October).

Could the two items be connected? Let's hope the new duty placed onschool governing bodies to promote wellbeing (Children Now, 1-8November) will remedy this. The DfES has a new mantra: "No more EveryChild Matters without standards, no more standards without Every ChildMatters - and no more Every Child Matters without schools taking part."This is welcome, and key to restoring the upward direction of theimprovement graph, which has hit a plateau.
