In many ways, faith-based organisations have a certain resilience to economic pressures. Take the church I work for as an example. Two-thirds of my wage and around three-quarters of the entire cost of the youth and children's work projects we run is funded by the giving of the local congregation who share our vision for re-engaging with younger generations. Funding has been constant and is not subject to government policy, target-driven agendas, nor short-term planning.
The remaining money has come from grants. It has been noticeably harder finding money over the past two years to fill this gap and we have relied on generous one-off donations, but this is unmanageable in the long term.
