Voluntary sector: Voluntary partners

The voluntary youth sector plays an invaluable role in the delivery of services to young people. But is its contribution all too often overlooked, asks Jo Stephenson.

Angela Sarkis, chief executive of the YMCA, believes the voluntary sector is not yet seen as "an automatic partner" for local authorities and children's trusts.

And Simon Antrobus, chief executive of Clubs for Young People, says: "In terms of local funders, we have evidence of contract breaches and reductions in funding at short notice for community-based work with young people."

Good partnerships do exist, according to Antrobus, but "it's a postcode lottery". John Bateman, chief executive of UK Youth, agrees: "There's some involvement in developing children's trusts, young people's plans and the youth offer but it is often minimal."
