News Insight: Voluntary sector - Recession hits the voluntary sector

The credit crunch is forcing vulnerable families to go without heating and cut down on food. So how is the voluntary sector, which is often best equipped to help these groups, coping with the downturn? Ben Cook finds out.

Averil Schram, managing director, Millmead Children's Centre, Kent

"It's difficult to accurately assess the impact because the recession is only just beginning. However, we are in a community that is living on the edge. Our outreach workers have noticed that some families that are having to pay higher utility bills are leaving the heating off all day. There are instances where children are not eating as much because families have less money.

We have a community cafe where parents can come in with their children - they're not doing that now because they don't have the money. We're also paying higher bills, which means we have to budget more carefully. The council has told us there will be a cut in our budget next year so something will have to go - if staff leave they may not be replaced."
