Joint Working - Review of sector skills councils

With the government examining the remit of all sector skills councils, the future for some is uncertain. Lauren Higgs reports.

Few people really know what sector skills councils do. But these state-funded independent bodies play a crucial role in the children and young people's sector.

They set standards, identify skills shortages and deal with workforce development, while also championing the voice of employers.

There are 25 sector skills councils in the UK. Each one receives around £3m from the government every year.

A review of the remit of every sector skills council is under way to make sure they are effective, a task that should be completed by the end of this year.

Those that are not up to scratch will be refused a licence. If this happens, their remit could be passed to one of the other councils.
