Youth work sector is split over skills council verdict

Youth organisations are divided over which sector skills council should manage youth work, with a final decision on the issue expected this summer.

The UK Commission for Employment and Skills is currently assessing which sector skills councils should be re-licensed. It will decide on whether Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) should continue to cover youth work or whether this remit should be transferred to the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC).

While the National Council for Voluntary Youth Services (NCVYS) supports a move to the CWDC, the Community and Youth Workers' Union (CYWU) says most youth workers want to remain with LLUK.

Doug Nicholls, national secretary of the union, said: "LLUK is a UK-wide council of occupational standards and is about learning and development in the community context, which is what youth work is about.
