SkillsActive, the playwork sector skills council, announced last week that it is drastically reducing the training support it provides to thousands of playworkers after the government cut its annual funding by a third.
The cut comes at a time when the government is looking at transferring some of the work sector skills councils do to the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) - see box. The council already works with SkillsActive, notably on a programme to get 4,000 playworkers qualified to A-level standard by 2011.
The increasing presence of CWDC within the playwork sector, coupled with the diminishing resources available to SkillsActive, has started to concern some playworkers. They fear that workforce reform is about to get swallowed up in a large organisation that lacks the necessary contacts and knowledge of play.
