SkillsActive, the sector skills council for play, has revealed that it will be forced to end contracts with four of its regional centres and cut back on its national programme of work.
The decision was made after the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) slashed its annual grant to SkillsActive by a third (CYP Now, 5-11 February). The centres affected are London, the north-east, the south-west and Yorkshire and Humber.
The news calls into question the ability of the government to meet is pledge to have 4,000 playworkers qualified to Level 3 by 2011.
Paul Bonel, director of playwork at SkillsActive, said: "To remain unaffected both nationally and regionally is simply impossible."
