Playworkers taking wrong diplomas

1 min read Early Years
Playworkers are being encouraged to sign up for inappropriate qualifications that do not equip them to do their job properly, it has been claimed.

Sector skills council Skills Active said it has found a number of playwork employers in England that are signing staff up for the Children's Workforce Development Council's (CWDC) Level 3 diploma for the children and young people's workforce, despite the course not having a playwork path or covering any of the playwork principles.

Lesli Godfrey, Skills Active's senior programme manager for playwork, education, training and qualifications, said: "People are under the impression CWDC's Level 3 diploma is for anyone working with children. This is not the case.

"The feedback we've had from employers found there are a lot of people who, although they are early years-qualified, don't have the necessary playwork understanding needed."
