The Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) gave many childcare employers what they wanted last week. The government revealed there will be a Level 2 qualification for early years, social care and learning development support services (LDSS).
The Level 2 Certificate is intended to be a stepping stone to the new Level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People's Workforce and not an end in itself. It will be available from September 2010 alongside the diploma, which will replace all existing Level 3 qualifications for the relevant sectors.
The CWDC's expert group of employers and training providers had raised concerns that people needed to learn the basics at Level 2 before jumping into an A-level-equivalent qualification at Level 3. Moreover, unlike social care and LDSS, a Level 2 qualification in reality represents the entry level for many working in early years. Without it, childcare employers would be forced to recruit only Level 3 practitioners from next year.
