
We moved into an old wireless navigation station and converted the "keepers cottages" into two small holiday lets and the old radar and generator rooms into our family home. As the Isle of Lewis is so remote, I used my knowledge of the internet to create a website to market the cottages.
I taught my mum, Elspeth, how to receive, manage and reply to bookings sent from the website and our business began to grow, enabling mum to work from home project managing the conversion while caring for my brother, sister and myself.
When I received a phone call recently from BT Internet Rangers, I was really surprised to find out that not only had my mum nominated me, but that I had been named the 2008 BT Internet Ranger of the Year too. We travelled to London as part of my prize and stayed in a hotel on Whitehall, which was not much smaller than the whole of our local island town.
