I liked school, had plenty of friends and managed to get five GCSEs. But then I had a life-changing experience.

Two years ago, my brother was sheltering from a storm when he was struck by lightning. He had 30 per cent burns and for three weeks was battling to stay alive. We are a close family and all of us wanted to care for him. My mum is a nurse but took a career break to look after him. I did my best to keep thinking positively but I did have some bad days and it stopped me progressing with my education.

Connexions referred me to Rathbone's centre in Old Trafford. People have heard of the area because that's where Manchester United's stadium is - but I doubt they know much more about it.

I am really happy at Rathbone, doing problem-solving and improving my CV. The next step is to go on a work placement. I like being busy - it's better than being on Bebo all day long.
