Have you sat through an entire meeting and wondered what your colleagues are rambling on about? Use our handy jargon guide to find out what they mean.

Tier 1

Where you might hear it: From anyone working in child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS).

What does it mean: Because different agencies refer and work with children and young people who have mental health problems, a four-tier system has been created. Tier 1 services are universal services such as GP surgeries, health visitors, school nurses, teachers, social workers and youth workers who can contribute to the mental healthcare of children and young people, but whose primary function is not mental healthcare. Practitioners at this level usually offer general advice.

How to use it: Speak to your local primary care trust to establish if there is any scope for your organisation to deliver tier 1 services. It might be willing to offer funding if you can show how you're helping to protect children and young people's mental health.
