THE IRU

Where you might hear it: From anyone working in education.

What does it mean: The IRU, or Implementation Review Unit, is an independent scrutiny unit that seeks to cut red tape in schools. The unit, which is staffed by a group of school workers, exists to challenge and support central and local government on how to apply government policies to schools. The ultimate aim of the IRU is to minimise administrative burdens on schools to leave more time for teaching and learning. It does this by providing guidance for schools on how best to comply with statutory duties. It also reviews and improves bureaucratic systems in schools.
