Inside Story: Young Firefighter Scheme, Selby Fire Station

What it is: A firefighter scheme for young people aged between 12 and 18 in North Yorkshire

Goal: To help young people develop both physically and mentally whilepromoting self-discipline, social consciousness and communityawareness

Funding: 3,000 from Selby District Council via the Selby DistrictCommunity Safety Partnership and 2,000 provided centrally by thelocal fire brigade's headquarters

The Young Firefighter Scheme is the first of its kind to be held atSelby Fire Station, but others are taking place in Tadcaster, Skiptonand Northallerton.

The project teaches young people aged between 12 and 18 discipline-basedexercises and basic drills such as climb-ing ladders, using a hose andfirst aid. The training can be used as a stepping stone towards a BTECeducational course.
