Good Idea: Firefighter course instils discipline in young people

A council programme run by the fire and rescue service aims to challenge the negative behaviour of young offenders and those with discipline issues.

Name: The Local Intervention Fire Education (LiFE) course

Provider: Hertfordshire County Council's Fire and Rescue service

Putting teenagers that display offending behaviour in charge of firefighting equipment takes a leap of faith, but that is exactly what a programme run by Hertfordshire Council's fire service does.

The young participants of the week-long Local Intervention Fire Education (LiFE) course are given a range of duties that a fire officer would be expected to carry out, while also building on their self-confidence and self-awareness within a disciplined team environment.

Youth engagement team leader Nick Quinlan, says: "LiFE is based on the role of the firefighter and participants take part in a range of activities from using ladders, casualty rescue techniques, wearing breathing apparatus and first aid. In addition to this, participants are given information on fire safety, prevention, consequences and healthy living.
