The New Life Counselling Service, which operates in the disadvantagedCrumlin Road and Ardoyne areas of north Belfast, provides crucialsupport to children, young people, families and adults. An award-winningcommunity-based organisation, its key objective is to address the lackof counselling services in the local area.

New Life, set up in 1993, has a team of fully qualified counsellors.

It also does outreach work in eight local schools, has health andwellbeing programmes, and runs parenting courses.

"We are responding to a real need," says Amanda Patterson, chief officerof New Life. "Many children who come to us have suffered some form ofabuse, and in the last year we have seen an increase in self-harm.
