Aims: To improve children's lives by supporting their families

Funding: Part of a 70,000 Staffordshire Children's Fund grant toRelate South Staffordshire. The money will last two years

Contact: Catherine Averill, project manager,catherine.relate@ldcvs.org.uk

Despite being a parenting project, Relate's Family Worker Project ischild-focused. "It's all about the Every Child Matters outcomes," saysproject manager Catherine Averill. "We support parents to improve theirrelationship with their children."

The project evolved out of an earlier Relate project called theParenting, Information and Support Project, which the Children's Fundalso bankrolled.

The earlier project began as an information service, says Averill, butafter consulting with parents it started providing support.

This support took several forms including one-to-one advice, dads andlads groups, and courses in disciplining children, managing stress andkite making. "Many parents asked for workshops," explains Averill. "Thecourses were a way to improve their relationship with theirchildren."
