Parents and adolescents often find themselves at war, but in some cases persistent rowing and serious behavioural problems can lead to children being taken into care.

One project that aims to keep families together is Families First, in the east London borough of Tower Hamlets. The programme, established in 2000 and run by staff from children's charity NCH, is based on a model imported from the USA in the 1970s and offers intensive support to young people and their families using crisis intervention techniques and therapy.
