Tower Hamlets is a borough with a split personality. The regeneration ofthe Docklands has made it one of the richest areas in the UK. But TowerHamlets also contains some of the most deprived areas in the country andsome of highest poverty levels.

Skillsmatch, which was formed in 1997 by a consortium that includesTower Hamlets Council, is an attempt to rectify that imbalance.

It gets local people who are out of work or in low paid, unsteady jobsand helps them get better paid, long-term employment. It does this byacting like a recruitment agency. Employers approach Skillsmatch withvacancies and Skillsmatch then attempts to find suitable candidates and,if necessary, gives them coaching or training.
