A mother whose son has autism was desperate to study for a degree. But,despite scouring her local area, not a single childcare setting waswilling to look after her child.
So Dens of Equality stepped in. It set up a local group of parents tohelp provide childcare for such children. The group was then awardedmoney through the Local Network Fund for a professional to pick childrenup from school and provide childcare at the local Sure Start centre.
The group has since gone on to work with a local leisure centre, whichhas also recruited extra staff. This has meant an extra 74 children canuse its facilities, a third of whom have special needs.
