Information obtained by Children Now suggests that the number of CRBapplications expected by the bureau will be far less than the 312,000people predicted to have access to the index.
At an information sharing conference last November, Peter James, theindex's deputy project director at the Department for Education andSkills, raised concerns about the increased demand for CRB checks thatthe database would cause. He told the conference he wondered if thebureau "can cope with that".
But in response to a freedom of information request by Children Now, thebureau said it expects that a "large proportion" of the 312,000 indexusers will already have enhanced criminal record checks "because oftheir work with children".
