Opinion: Debate - Will the national child index help prevent childabuse?

1 min read
The Government is setting up an electronic database that will hold details about every child living in England. The national index aims to improve information sharing between professionals and, by doing so, stop child abuse.

YES - SUE BERELOWITZ, head of families and schools support, West SussexCounty Council

The national child index will be a very useful tool in helpingpractitioners to identify children and young people who are potentiallyvulnerable. It is important to remember that it is only a tool and thatsafeguarding children depends on good and effective practice from allagencies. We will all be responsible for ensuring that this additionalresource is an effective mechanism for securing the safety of vulnerablechildren and young people.

YES - BUT CHRIS MILLS, policy advisor, NSPCC

Information systems in themselves will not protect children. The indexwill not be effective unless it brings about tangible benefits tosafeguard children and young people. These must be adequately resourcedif children are to be safer. The index will only help if it accuratelykeeps track of children and their families who move regularly acrossregional and national boundaries in the United Kingdom.
