The Government is to go ahead with a national index to enable professionals to share information on children more easily.

Sounds a line of dialogue from The Prisoner: "I am a child - I am not anumber". Well, children's minister Beverley Hughes announced on 8December 2005 that the Government does indeed plan to go ahead and setup a national electronic index with a record on every child in Englandup to the age of 18.

Why? Remember one of the main findings from the inquiry into the deathof Victoria Climbie: practitioners know they need to share and discussinformation on individual children, but can find it difficult to doso.
