Information Sharing Index: DfES officials examine ways to protect children's privacy

1 min read
Department for Education and Skills officials are examining how to ensure the Information Sharing Index does not reveal personal details about children, it emerged last week.

Ministers have repeatedly brushed off claims from those opposed to theindex that the system will give children's professionals access tosensitive information about children.

But Peter James, the index's deputy project director at the DfES, lastweek said that including full details of every professional involvedwith a child could unintentionally reveal individual children's casedetails.

James said: "We're recording a practitioner name and organisation on theindex, but when we get down to specialised practitioners we have toquestion whether we show that information."

He said naming specialised workers could unintentionally reveal caseinformation about a child. One example of this could be if a child wasin contact with a worker who specialises in work with children whosexually abuse other children.
