Outstanding teachers, an inclusive child policy and consulting parentson services are among the key ingredients that have made CollyhurstNursery School a success, according to Maria Nugent, manager of thechildren's centre where it's based.

The nursery - which received an outstanding Ofsted report at all levels- prides itself on its inclusive nature. "We never turn children away,"Nugent explains. "As soon as we're able to identify a child who hasadditional needs we will make sure they're met and take them up tolearning at five."

The nursery caters for deaf children and those with autism and picturesand storyboards are used with children who don't speak English as afirst language. Parents are also encouraged to engage and interact withtheir children in creative environments such as artistic workshops.

Every week, for instance, a resident artist works with the children onvarious projects. One involved children painting portraits of variousstaff members. Such work was described by Ofsted as "an exemplary spurto creative development".
