It's all very well offering clubs and other extended activities, but how do you ensure all children, including vulnerable groups, can enjoy them? This is a question always at the forefront of head teacher Mike Crabtree's mind.

Of the pupils at his school - Woolenwick Junior School in Stevenage - a quarter are classed as "vulnerable". That can mean anything from being a young carer or on the child protection register to having a mental health problem or coming from a family that's struggling financially.

If you add children with special educational needs, then that makes 46 per cent of Woolenwick at risk of being excluded from extended activities for various reasons.
