The transition from primary to secondary school is a daunting time for most children. But some find it more difficult than others.

Schools can do much to help both children and parents deal with times of change, says Jen Scott, national programme manager at ContinYou. She oversees several programmes run by the learning charity including the Pyramid scheme, which is helping children successfully make the move from primary to secondary school.

ContinYou works with local authorities and trains professionals, such as extended schools co-ordinators, to deliver Pyramid, which provides after-school clubs for children who need extra support with social and emotional development.

"We're talking about those children who perhaps don't get as much attention in school," says Scott. "They may be quiet and not causing problems but actually that's because they're hiding."
