In Practice: Case study - A leg up to secondary school

3 mins read
The transition can be tough for children as they prepare to move from primary to secondary school. Jo Stephenson looks at one project that offers support to those children who have fears and anxieties about making the switch.

Objectives: The move from primary to secondary school is a big step for most children but can be more problematic for some. Acton-based Social enterprise The Pupil Parent Partnership based in Acton, west London, runs an innovative transition project, which aims to provide extra support to those who need it. The project, which is funded by the local Children's Fund, has been going for about five years and runs in six primary and three secondary schools in the London Borough of Ealing.

What was done: The project begins after pupils have taken their Sats and kicks off with a theatre play for all Year 6 children about the move to secondary school, explains Gail Tinsley, section co-ordinator for Parent Pupil Partnership's projects team. This is followed up by a workshop. Five or six young people from each primary are then chosen for the next stage, which sees them meet weekly to explore their hopes and anxieties about moving school.
