In Practice: Case study - Back to school for business staff

2 mins read
Several local businesses in Bristol are allowing their employees to volunteer as reading buddies at Hannah More Primary School. Jo Stephenson looks at the benefits to both the schoolchildren and the companies involved.

Objectives: Hannah More Primary School in Bristol works in partnership with local charity Ablaze (A Business Learning Action Zone in Education), which works to improve aspiration, education and attainment in schools. Since 2002 they have collaborated on a Reading Buddies scheme that sees volunteers from local firms come into the school for weekly one-to-one sessions with pupils to help boost their reading and literacy skills.

What was done: Ablaze identifies firms interested in taking part in the scheme and volunteer Reading Buddies then work with targeted children, who may have a lower than average reading age or simply lack confidence in reading.
