In Practice: Case study - School sports get an energy boost

Oldham council took on five PE technicians in a bid to raise levels of physical activity among children and young people, both at school and through extended services. Jo Stephenson looks at their contribution to participation in sports.

Objectives Oldham council was keen to increase sports and physical activity in and around extended schools so its sports development service took on five "PE technicians" funded by extended services. Their remit is to set up physical activities both within and outside school and work with teachers and parents. PE technicians are also expected to reach out into the wider community and forge partnerships with organisations such as sports clubs.

What was done The scheme got off the ground last September and there are now five PE technicians based in primary schools and working across five of Oldham's extended school clusters. They run a wide variety of activities in 19 schools, including a young leaders' programme that sees Years 5 and 6 pupils run sessions for younger Key Stage 1 children.
