You've got to speculate to accumulate and that's certainly what South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College has done.

In order to support comprehensive extended school services, the East Yorkshire school has found ways to generate income and invested heavily in non-teaching staff.

Headteacher Chris Abbott admits this was a risky strategy but one that's paid off. The school, which is just outside Hull, now runs a raft of successful enterprises including a sports centre and conference and catering business and is developing a media centre. Abbot distinguishes between these "extended services" and extended schools activities but says they work in tandem.

The school's approach was driven by necessity. "We wanted 52-week-a-year opening but knew we were not going to get the funding," says Abbott.
