
According to the Department for Children, Schools and Families, many schools are uncertain about their role in early intervention.
But one school in Wigan, supported by the council's children and young people's services department, has made early intervention a key part of its educational philosophy. Helen Mackenzie, head teacher of Shevington High, says her school decided on a new approach in 2002 when it became apparent there was a group of children coming through the school's feeder primary schools who had social, emotional and behavioural needs that potentially could hamper their learning. "We needed to find a structure that was able to meet those needs and enable those children to succeed academically," she says.
