In common with many children's centres in Manchester, Rusholme SureStart centre made a strong impression on Ofsted inspectors when theyvisited for three days last summer.
The centre received an outstanding rating for "helping children make apositive contribution" and for "organisation and leadership" when theresults of the inspections were announced in May. In all othercategories the centre was awarded "good" ratings.
Rusholme in inner city Manchester is an ethnically mixed area. Home toManchester's famous "Curry Mile" it is home to a large Asian,predominantly Muslim population. According to head of centre RhondaDouglas it is important that the centre reflects the ethnic diversity ofthe area and the languages spoken. "In order to help children make apositive contribution you really need to support them in their ownlanguage, and we have a member of staff who speaks Urdu andPunjabi."
