Focus on disabled children- Peter Gerrard head of East Staffordshire Children's Centre.

When a child is diagnosed with a disability, for many families it's the start of an arduous battle to get the help they need. East Staffordshire Children's Centre is at the forefront of efforts to ensure families are supported from the beginning.

The centre in Burton-on-Trent offers the full range of children's centre services alongside specialist services for families who are usually referred by GPs or hospitals. It benefited from the fact that the paediatrics team from nearby Queen's Hospital is based at the centre, which means medical professionals, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists are on site.

There are huge benefits in having these people under one roof, says head of centre Peter Gerrard. It means parents and children don't have the stress of traipsing from one service to another and professionals can make a joint assessment of a child's needs.
