Running a children's centre is a challenge in any sector. But there are some specific issues for voluntary organisations, and smaller groups in particular, says Suzanne Murray, who runs a consortium of voluntary sector organisations involved in children's centres in Islington.
Nationally, only a small proportion of children's centres are run by voluntary organisations, mostly the larger children's charities. But the London borough is somewhat unusual in that several smaller groups have taken on centres.
Three of Islington's 16 centres will be led by voluntary organisations and two more will have a voluntary organisation as a key part of the management team. Murray, whose post is funded by the Baring Foundation, is based at one - Islington Play Association.
