Special schools have a vital role in the extended schools agenda buttheir resources and expertise are often under-used, believes PiaKerridge.

As head teacher at The Parks School in Rutland, she's working withparents, staff, governors and local special educational needs (SEN)co-ordinators to develop innovative extended services.

The small school caters for children aged two to six with SEN includingsocial, communication and learning difficulties, and incorporates afamily support centre for the birth to 19 age range.

A stand-out partnership is between the school and a counselling serviceat the centre.

"When we spoke with families this was the most requested service,"explains Kerridge, who works closely with centre co-ordinator JoannaLisk and counsellor David Brindley.
