Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School was in danger of becomingisolated within its community in Tower Hamlets, east London, admitsassistant director Patrick Brown.

While its boys' and girls' schools have a diverse mix of pupils, theyboth suffered because of religious and cultural tensions within thecommunity that peaked in the form of violence against students andvandalism.

However, an active community programme has helped the school break downbarriers, work across local "territories" and reposition itself at theheart of local life. What's more, it recently won a contract to providelocal youth services.

The school has made efforts to reach out to different groups such as thesignificant Bengali Muslim population in the area.
