From the start, the Tinsley consortium has been shaped by the people whouse it. That, says project manager Sally Pearse, is the secret of itssuccess.
Sandwiched between a motorway and an industrial estate, Tinsley inSheffield scores high on the deprivation index with poor housing andpoor health statistics, but Pearse says it's "a vibrant community wherepeople are willing to get involved".
The Parents and Children's Consortium, which has recently earned anoutstanding report from Ofsted, began life seven years ago to addressthe lack of childcare, training and health services in thecommunity.
"There was so little for families," says Pearse. Just how great the needwas became clear when 60 women turned up with their children to aninitial meeting. And it was obvious the local women did not just want aplaygroup but also wanted activities and opportunities forthemselves.
