The Tesco Charity Trust was set up in 1987 by the supermarket chain to support national and local charities. As part of that work, the trust runs a Community Awards scheme, and in the year ending February 2007 gave out grants totalling £585,000 to community projects. Grants from £1,000 to £4,000 are available for work to support children's welfare and education, including projects in special-needs schools. There are two funding rounds each year. The next opens on 1 May. Organisations can complete an application by going to the "charitable-giving" section of Tesco's website. The trust also funds projects that support elderly people and those with disabilities.
